New Goshute Initiative:

Thanks to a generous grant from Jane Shock and American Express, starting this school year, we will be providing healthy, kid-friendly food each week to the school children of the Goshute Tribe, in far Western Utah. Over the past ten years, the Christian Center has organized 15 trips down to the Navajo people living around the southeastern edge of Utah, in the “Four Corners” area. We are now excited to be partnering with the Goshute tribe of Western Utah, by delivering healthy, kid-friendly food to be distributed each week to their school children. We will be providing a backpack full of school supplies the first week of school, in addition to the bag of food. Each subsequent week, we will ensure that every school child has a backpack full of healthy food each week, throughout the school year.

New Refugee Program:
During 2007, there wereapproximately 500 refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma), most of them from the Karen ethnic group living in refugee camps in Thailand, who arrived in Salt Lake City ready for a fresh start in a new country. Since then, even more Burmese Karen, Karenni and Chin have come to Salt Lake City since then. In the next month, there will be a group of them relocated to Heber City. They are being moved here from Salt Lake for new employment opportunities. Most of them have been in refugee camps for the last 10 years prior to coming to the United States, and they are in need of help. From clothes, to food and furniture, we are ready to help meet them at their point of need.

Food 4 Kids Backpack Program:

This Past spring, we started a food for kids backpack program…and they asked for more! Too many children go home over the weekend to homes where there is either no food, or unhealthy, non-kid-friendly food. That is where the “Food For Kids Backpack Program” comes in. It is our goal to provide every child in Park City’s elementary schools who are in need of food have access to healthy, kid-friendly food every weekend for the entire school year.
THIS YEAR: We are expanding! Not only are we serving four area elementary schools, we are expanding to serve the Goshute Native American Reservation. We are also going to provide backpacks for Myanmar refugees recently relocated to Heber. Click here for more information and the school supply list: http://www.ccofpc.org/news/news-posts/
